Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed that the United States has requested specific assistance to bolster defenses against Iranian attacks in the Middle East. In a Telegram post, Zelensky stated that he has instructed the provision of necessary resources and the deployment of Ukrainian specialists to ensure security.
While Washington has not publicly commented on this request, Zelensky emphasized Ukraine’s commitment to aiding partners who contribute to its own security. Just days prior, he announced Ukraine’s readiness to assist Middle Eastern nations in defending against Iranian aggression, with plans for Ukrainian experts to work directly in the region.
“Our military possesses the necessary capabilities. Ukrainian experts will be on-site, and arrangements are already being made. We are prepared to help protect lives, safeguard civilians, and support genuine efforts to stabilize the situation, particularly for ensuring safe navigation in the region,” Zelensky noted following a meeting focused on the Middle East and the Gulf area.
Military analyst Valentyn Badrak discussed on Radio Liberty how assistance to Gulf countries in countering Iranian Shahed drones could enhance Ukraine’s position. He argued that proactive steps are essential for Ukraine as it integrates into the European space. “When we act together with Europe, it sees us as a powerful asset with new technologies,” he stated.
Badrak also highlighted the importance of acquiring licenses for missile technologies, such as those for Patriot and Aster missiles, to scale up Ukraine’s defense capabilities. “These are areas we need to focus on,” he added.
The military operation by the U.S. and Israel against Iran commenced on February 28. In retaliation, Tehran launched strikes against Israel and U.S. military bases in the Persian Gulf, affecting not only military installations but also civilian targets across several countries.
