Russian Military Casualties in Ukraine Conflict Reach Over 1.27 Million

As of March 15, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Russia has suffered a total of 1,279,170 military casualties since the onset of the full-scale war against Ukraine. In the last 24 hours alone, 740 personnel were reported lost.

The Ukrainian military command also disclosed figures regarding Russian equipment losses:

  • Tanks: 11,781 (+4 in the last day)
  • Armored fighting vehicles: 24,213 (+1)
  • Artillery systems: 38,438 (+17)
  • Multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS): 1,686
  • Air defense systems: 1,332
  • Aircraft: 435
  • Helicopters: 349
  • Tactical drones: 179,270 (+1,984)
  • Cruise missiles: 4,468 (+65)
  • Ships/boats: 31 (+1)
  • Submarines: 2
  • Vehicles and fuel tankers: 83,513 (+110)
  • Specialized equipment: 4,089 (+1)

Russia has not officially disclosed its military losses. The last public statement regarding the number of fatalities was made in September 2022, when the figure was reported at 5,937.

Meanwhile, journalists from the Russian publication Mediazona, along with the BBC Russian Service and a team of volunteers, have identified over 200,000 names of Russian soldiers who have died in the conflict since February 2022, based on open-source information. They note that this list is not exhaustive, as information about the deaths of all servicemen is not always made publicly available.

Estimates of total Russian losses, including both wounded and killed, from international organizations and intelligence agencies are significantly higher. In December 2025, a NATO official, speaking on condition of anonymity, informed the BBC Russian Service that the total number of dead and wounded in the Russian military could be approaching 1.15 million. They noted that in November, average daily losses for Russia were around 1,100 personnel.

Ukraine has also refrained from disclosing its own casualty figures for an extended period, stating that such information would be released after the war. President Volodymyr Zelensky has begun to provide updates approximately once a year. In an interview with France 2 in early February 2026, he stated that Ukraine has lost 55,000 soldiers since February 2022, while also acknowledging a significant number of individuals classified as missing in action.

On January 13, 2026, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi announced that personnel losses in the Ukrainian military had been reduced by 13% in 2025, though he did not provide specific details regarding Ukrainian casualties.

The Ukrainian military reports that Russian military casualties have surpassed 1.27 million since the start of the conflict. While Russia has not officially confirmed these figures, independent sources suggest the actual number may be higher, with significant losses in personnel and military equipment documented.
