On Monday, the newspaper Le Monde reported that after the visit of the Prime Minister of Great Britain, Keir Starmer, to France, the two countries again began to discuss the initiative of sending troops to Ukraine.
However, British Foreign Minister David Lammy emphasized that the country will adhere to its “long-standing commitment” not to introduce troops into the war zone.
We clearly state that we are ready and continue to support the Ukrainians, in particular through training, but we adhere to the long-standing position that we do not send British troops to a theater of operations. This was certainly the position of Great Britain, and it remains so today
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of France, Jean-Noel Barro, in an interview with the BBC at the weekend, said that he does not rule out the possibility of sending French troops to Ukraine to participate in hostilities, if such a need arises.
This statement confirmed the words of French President Emmanuel Macron, made at the beginning of the year.
“We do not reject any option,” Barro emphasized.
On Monday, Downing Street once again denied the possibility of sending British troops to Ukraine.
A spokesman for Prime Minister Keir Starmer, commenting on the publication in Le Monde, told reporters that there are no such plans. When asked about the possibility of excluding the participation of British troops in hostilities, he answered: “Yes, except for what was already mentioned about medical assistance and the presence around the embassy. We do not plan to involve troops in hostilities together with Ukrainian troops.”
He also added that he was not aware of any discussion of this issue between Starmer and Macron.
We will remind
The publication Le Monde reported that against the background of the escalation of the war in Ukraine, discussions regarding the sending of Western troops and private defense companies to Ukraine have been renewed.
It was noted that these discussions were resumed due to the possible refusal of America to support Kyiv after the inauguration of Donald Trump as president of the United States on January 20, 2025.
