Today, January 20, Ukraine honors the memory of the fighters who in 2014-2015 heroically defended the Donetsk airport from attacks by pro-Russian militants. The defense of the airport became one of the fiercest and most symbolic events of the war in eastern Ukraine, he writes UNN.

The main battles for DAP began after the signing of the “Minsk Agreements” in September 2014. In total, Ukrainian defenders defended the airport for 242 days between May 2014 and January 2015. After numerous attempts by the enemy to storm DAP, its Ukrainian defenders acquired the nickname “cyborgs”, which, according to one version, was given by the terrorists themselves.

“Cyborgs survived, concrete did not” became a symbolic phrase that reflected the heroism of Ukrainian defenders.

January 2015 became the bloodiest month in the entire period of the struggle for the Donetsk airport, when Ukrainian fighters heroically resisted the numerous attacks of pro-Russian militants. One of the most terrifying moments happened on January 13, when the control tower of the airport collapsed due to constant tank and artillery attacks by militants. The image of this tower is now a symbol of DAP defense.

In the following days, the fighting moved to the new terminal, where the Ukrainian military held the first floor, while the enemy controlled the basement and upper floors. At the end of January 18-20, taking advantage of the temporary truce to evacuate their wounded and dead, the enemy laid mines on the terminal floor and blew them up, causing significant destruction. As a result of the explosion, 58 defenders were killed, who stood on the front line to the last, defending every meter. According to official data, about 100 soldiers died defending the Donetsk airport.
