The US military carried out an airstrike in southern Somalia that killed two members of the al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab group, including a senior commander.

The strike occurred on Tuesday about 10 kilometers (six miles) southwest of the town of Quino Barrow, south of Mogadishu.
“As a result of the attack, two members of Al-Shabaab were killed, none of the civilians were injured. The African Command is taking measures to prevent harm to the civilian population,” the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) said in a statement.
The Somali government issued a statement praising the “carefully planned operation” carried out with “international partners” in the same area.
