Details
President Joe Biden authorized Ukraine’s first use of US-supplied long-range missiles for strikes on Russian territory.
According to American officials, initially the weapons will most likely be used against Russian and North Korean troops to protect Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region in western Russia.
Biden’s decision is a major change in US politics. The change took place two months before the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, who promised to limit further support to Ukraine.
Ukraine’s permission to use long-range missiles, known as Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), was obtained in response to Russia’s surprise decision to engage North Korean forces in hostilities, officials said.
While officials said they did not expect a dramatic change in the course of the war, one goal of the policy change, they said, is to send a signal to the North Koreans that their forces are vulnerable and that they should not send more such forces.
The officials said that while the Ukrainians would most likely use the missiles first against Russian and North Korean forces threatening Ukrainian forces in Kursk, Biden could allow them to use those weapons elsewhere.
