The publication writes that the leaders of the European Union are trying to find out whether they will be able to continue military operations if Donald Trump decides to end support from the United States.
During a meeting in Budapest on Thursday, officials discussed whether the bloc would be willing to pay for the war. The big concern is that Trump will try to shift the financial burden to Europe, although nothing in the initial talks suggests a major change of tack
It is noted that during the election campaign, Trump promised that he would quickly end hostilities in Ukraine, but expressed ambiguous opinions about support for Kyiv.
The publication’s interlocutors note that Europe should wait until Trump’s inauguration in January to find out about his intentions regarding Ukraine, and the European Commission should come up with proposals on how the bloc will react to the withdrawal of US aid.
Also, the publication, citing the Kiel Institute of World Economy, writes that the EU was the largest provider of aid to Ukraine, allocating 118 billion euros since the beginning of the conflict. The US provided a total of 85 billion euros, although the flow of money decreased this year, allocating only 17 billion euros. The EU provided almost twice as much.
It is emphasized that the real problems were not so much in the money itself, but in the available military resources, which came mainly from the USA. The US is an important source of some of the most powerful weapons, such as the F-16 and ATACMS. Also, the production capacity of the United States is important for maintaining the supply of 155-mm shells, which are the basis of Ukraine’s defense operations.
We will remind
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor OrbƔn said that Europe will not be able to independently finance the defense of Ukraine against the invasion of Russia if the United States withdraws support during the next presidency of Donald Trump.
