The Ternopil City District Court remanded Oleg Poberezhnyuk, the commander of the military unit of the 211th pontoon bridge brigade, who is suspected of abuse of office, into custody with the possibility of paying a bail of UAH 908,400, reports UNN.

“Apply the suspect Poberezhnyuk to a preventive measure in the form of detention, taking Poberezhnyuk into custody from the courtroom. The date of expiry of the decision is February 13, 2025. Set bail in the amount of UAH 908,400,” the judge said.

“The court chose the commander of the 211th pontoon-bridge brigade of the Support Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine as a preventive measure – detention with the right to pay a bail of UAH 908,400,” the Prosecutor General’s Office reported in the meantime.

Context

Servicemen of the 211th pontoon-bridge brigade of the Support Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine told the media about mockery of soldiers, extortion of money and nepotism.

Dmytro Lubinets, the Human Rights Commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, stated that he sent letters to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Military Law and Order Service of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to verify information and conduct an official investigation with the aim of further response.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrsky initiated an inspection of the 211th pontoon-bridge brigade of the Support Forces of the Armed Forces due to reports of abuse of soldiers. During the inspection, the commander of the military unit was suspended.

Subsequently, criminal proceedings were initiated based on the facts of the illegal actions of the commanders of the 211th pontoon-bridge brigade, the commander of the said brigade was informed of the suspicion of abuse of his official position.

The investigation established that in the fall of 2023, he involved four subordinates in the construction of his house in the Khmelnytsky region instead of their service in war zones. According to the documents, the soldiers were on the front line and received salaries and combat payments in the total amount of almost one million hryvnias.

The house is being built in the Khmelnytskyi region on the territory of the Slobidsko-Kulchievetsk community. The correspondents of Suspilno were there, they spoke with the head of the community. He said that he did not know about the situation involving the military in the construction. And the house is being built for the mother of the brigade commander. Investigators, the chairman says, did not interview him on this issue.

The Prosecutor General’s Office reported that possible illegal actions of brigade officers are also being investigated: physical violence against subordinates, extortion of money and abuse of power. The investigation was entrusted to the SBI.
