Sybig was asked to comment on how Ukraine considers yesterday’s public statements of Donald Trump regarding the future membership of Ukraine in NATO, as to what he can understand the Russian Federation, he answered: “I know for sure that the common interest of the transatlantic community is the achievement of a sustainable, just, comprehensive peace I can definitely say that Russia wants war and the destruction of Ukraine. I can definitely say that Russia has not changed its rhetoric – the rhetoric of capitulation and ultimatums”.
The head of MFA noted that the best format for exchanging opinions is the format of direct communication.
“That’s why we are extremely interested in an active dialogue, including at the level of leaders, and this format allows for a very effective exchange of opinions, both regarding the causes and the consequences,” said Sybiga.
Context
As the BBC writes, it was obvious from Trump’s answers to questions about Ukraine that he was still more interested in the opportunity to criticize Joe Biden than in the real circumstances of the conflict and the possibilities of its settlement.
He reiterated that if he had been president, this war would never have started.
Trump also said that he “can understand the feelings” of Russia in connection with the fact that Joe Biden allegedly violated the “agreement” on the refusal to accept Ukraine into NATO.
“A big part of the problem was that Russia had been saying for many years, long before Putin, that NATO should not be in Ukraine. It was kind of set in stone,” Trump said.
“And somewhere in the process, Biden said, no, they should be able to join NATO. Well, for Russia to have someone right on the doorstep – I can understand their feelings about that,” the US president-elect added.
Asked by a journalist to explain when exactly the USA denied the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO, the president-elect said: “I believe that it was always clear.”
