Details

According to local resident Zakaria Daud, who lives nearby, the shooting continued for several minutes in the area of the presidential complex.

These developments have raised security concerns in the country, located in a region where military coups are common.

It is currently unknown where exactly the shots came from. In the video, which is believed to have been taken nearby, military vehicles and armed soldiers can be seen on the streets and within the presidential palace.

Foreign Minister Abderaman Kulamallah said in a live broadcast on Facebook that the situation is completely under control. He recorded the address from the presidential palace, being there accompanied by the military. He added that they are there to protect the president.

The shooting happened about a week after parliamentary elections, which were supposed to help restore democracy in the country. However, the main opposition boycotted these elections. The results have not yet been announced, but analysts believe the vote will help consolidate the power of President Mahamat Debi Itno.

Mahamat Debi Itno came to power as a military ruler after the death of his father in 2021. Itno’s father, who ruled the country for three decades, was killed in a battle with the rebels. Last year, Itno Jr. won the presidential elections, which international observers recognized as not meeting democratic standards.
