The recent death of an Indian citizen who fought as part of the Russian army in Ukraine has drawn attention to the Kremlin’s practice of enlisting foreigners in hostilities and “strained previously prosperous relations between New Delhi and Moscow,” the newspaper said.
Citing statements from the Indian government and relatives of the men who ended up in the Russian army, WP reported that the Russian side was recruiting them with promises of jobs or education.
According to WP, about a hundred Indian citizens are participating in the war on the side of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. Binil Babu, 32, who died in January, became the tenth Indian to be confirmed dead.
