In particular, he expressed hope that Tehran and Moscow will sign this agreement “at the end of January”.

As the publication notes, the new agreement, which could potentially be concluded a few days before Trump’s inauguration on January 20, shows an attempt by the two countries to join forces amid growing isolation on the world stage.

The agreement with Iran was developed for several years, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation claimed at the beginning of 2022 that a “major new interstate agreement” was coming to an end, without providing specifics.

According to the publication, at the end of October 2024, a few days after the head of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin, met with the president of Iran, Massoud Pezeshkian, at the BRICS summit in Kazan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergey Lavrov, said that the agreement would be ready for signing by the two leaders in the near future. . According to him, this “will formalize the parties’ commitment to close defense cooperation and interaction in the interests of regional and global peace and security.”

The agreement on a comprehensive strategic partnership between the Russian Federation and the Islamic Republic of Iran will be an important factor in strengthening Russian-Iranian relations

It is also noted that according to the Iranian state news agency Mehr News Agency, the new bilateral agreement will replace the 20-year strategic agreement signed between the countries in 2001 and extended in 2020. The document deals with cooperation in such areas as energy, production, transport and agriculture.
