US President Joe Biden’s administration is working on a plan to extend the authority to send $5.9 billion in US arms and equipment to Ukraine before the funding deadline expires at the end of the month, Politico reports. UNN.

The authority, part of an aid package for Ukraine passed in April, allows the Pentagon to use its own stockpiles to quickly transfer weapons and equipment to Ukraine. The money is then spent to replace that equipment in US arsenals, but that authority expires when the new fiscal year begins on October 1.

“The new workaround — which requires the administration to announce that it is using the remaining aid in the coming months — would allow the Pentagon to continue supplying weapons to Kiev. However, this method would prevent the U.S. from introducing new types of equipment that were not previously delivered.” the message says.

If this is implemented in time, “supply may be exceeded [фінансового року] no problem,” said Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Charlie Dietz. Although the White House wanted Congress to include the money in funding that would continue the government’s work beyond Oct. 1, that option would preserve it even without congressional action, the paper said.

House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R-Alabama) called the lack of a Ukraine extension provision in Speaker Mike Johnson’s proposed three-month funding package “not a real problem” if the administration decides to release the money next week.

“My understanding is … as long as the White House tells us they’re going to use them, we don’t really have a problem,” Rogers said.

House Appropriations Defense Subcommittee Chairman Ken Calvert (R-Calif.) said, “I understand there is already a workaround” that the Biden administration plans to use. “I’m not quite sure how they’re going to do it, but I’m told they do.”

“They’re going to try to get around it, the administration is going to try because [українцям] resources are needed right now so that they can implement their ‘win plan,’ which I think is extremely important,” said House Foreign Affairs Committee ranking member Gregory Meeks.

Meeks said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi, whom he met Monday at the UN General Assembly, is likely to press the issue in meetings with President Joe Biden and during Zelenskyi’s visit to Capitol Hill on Thursday.
