“Today, the war museum took an extremely important and symbolic step – dismantling the letters that spell out the names of the cities and the image of the Soviet Gold Star medal on the Alley of Heroic Cities. The museum initiated an examination of the bronze reliefs. Specialists of the National Research and Restoration Center of Ukraine conducted a study, on on the basis of which the “Passport of the state of preservation of the bronze overlay elements of the “Gold Star” medals and text inscriptions was formed substantiated the need for their dismantling and carrying out restoration,” the message reads.
The footage shows that we are talking, in particular, about the names of such cities as Moscow, Minsk, and also, probably, Novorossiysk.
The museum reminded that the term “Hero City” in the USSR was approved after the decree of the Presidium of the Verkhovna Rada of the USSR dated May 8, 1965 “On the approval of the regulation on the highest degree of recognition – the title “Hero City”, and the first cities to receive such a title were Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Odesa, Sevastopol, Volgograd, Kyiv, Moscow.
“It is worth noting that no criteria were defined for the work of the commissions that made decisions on awarding the title of “Hero City”. The designation of cities was chaotic and was used purely for ideological purposes – the implementation of the myth of the “Great Patriotic War”, – emphasized in museums
