The Center for Strategic Communications and Information Security drew attention to this. His experts found out that The National Interest is owned by Dmitry Simes, who actively supports Russian propaganda. After 2022, he is in the Russian Federation and is accused by the US Department of Justice of violating sanctions, which carries a penalty of up to 60 years in prison. The publication has long been associated with pro-Russian views, and Symes himself moderated events organized by the Kremlin and received funding from Russian state structures.
This message aims to undermine faith in the Victory of Ukraine and encourages citizens to doubt their country’s ability to continue the struggle. Such rhetoric also helps to create the illusion of the futility of aid to Ukraine in order to discourage Western powers from providing arms and financial support. In this way, Symes justifies the further crimes of the Russians, while at the same time creating the appearance of the strength and invincibility of the Russian regime for the domestic audience.
