At the Ukrainian Crisis Media Center, a presentation of the annual War Index with monitoring of military activity in the world in 2024 was held.

The principle of research formation-ranking of military-political conflicts and diplomatic clashes from the hottest and largest to the least noticeable but potentially dangerous.

The Great War in Europe, the Powder Tuber in the Middle East, the emergence of North Korea troops on the Russian-Ukrainian front, exacerbation in the Pacific region, Trump’s expansionist statements and “destroying the principle of territorial integrity phase”?

This was discussed by the co-authors of the study: Yuriy Syrotyuk, Director of the Non-State Analytical Center “Ukrainian Strategic Studies Studies”, Chief Sergeant of the Fire Support of the 5th OSBR of the Armed Forces; Andriy Rudyk, Doctor of Philosophy in the field of social and behavioral sciences, major of the Armed Forces; Yuriy Oliynyk, Candidate of Political Science, Head of Research Programs of Natsk “USSD”, serviceman of the Armed Forces; Oleksandr Chupak, Head of Economic Programs of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and Kateryna Shimkevich, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Expert of the Balkan Research Analytical Center.

Last year, 8 interstate wars continued in the world (Ukraine, Israel, Syria, Yemen, South Sudan, Sudan, Ethiopia, Tsar), two border collisions (Armenia – Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan – Tajikistan), 18 local conflicts (Afghanistan, Libya, M. ‘Yanma, Mali, Burkina-Faso, DR Congo, Somalia, Nigeria, Mozambick, Chad, Cameroon, Western Sahara, Niger, Senegal, Western Papua (Indonesia), Beludzhistan (Pakistan and Iran)), Partisan War (Tailand), 5 International crisis (Latin America (several countries), Bangladesh, Balkans (several countries), Iraq, Iran), 4 force diplomatic conflicts (Guyana – Venezuela, Greece – Turkey, Korean Peninsula, Taiwan) – a total of 38 cases confrontation by military methods.

In 2024, the dynamics of military confrontation in the world increased by more than 5%compared to 2023. And more than 10%compared to 2022.

Thus, in 2024, the main event on a global scale continued to be a Russian-Ukrainian war, which in the intensity of technical means became one of the most large-scale after the Korean War, as well as the largest conflict of Europe since 1945.

Serious consequences for the world and the Middle East region have a Palestinian-Israeli war, which began with a terrorist attack of Hamas group on Israel, and then escalated into Israel’s military operation in the Gaza sector, and subsequently turned to Lebanon and led to the exchange of air strikes between Irran and Isra. At the end of the year, the rapid fall of Bashar Assad regime in Syria led to a radical restructuring of the balance of forces in the region and a decrease in the impact of Russia.

The voltage in the Pacific region is growing. Traditionally, the situation around Taiwan in the context of China’s regular naval exercises. Of particular concern is the demonstration of the military threat and the statement of the DPRK’s readiness for war, which is accompanied by the direct participation of Pyongyang in the Russian-Ukrainian War.

There are still long -term conflicts in the territory of less developed states, although much of them reduces the intensity in the negotiation process (for example, in Ethiopia). At the same time, a potentially large -scale conflict between the Congo and Rwanda is unfolding.

The attacks of Yemeni Hussites on civilian vessels in the Red Sea continue to threaten the safety of global supply chains.

Traditionally, the situation in West Africa remains in tense, where Russia increases instability and supports military coups.

Power remains the main argument for resolving international disputes, the characteristic feature was the restoration of the conventional means of warfare, with the front -line clash of numerous armies. On the other hand, the importance of the technical level, especially in the field of accuracy and speed of data transmission, became obvious.

Along with the proxy of the United States and China, regional leaders-Iran, Turkey-are actively interfering with force competition. The influence of network paramilitary formations and the emergence of a quasi -state tool is increased. These quasi -states fill the lacunae of “dead zones” that are formed outside the influence of nation -states, regional leaders and as a result of strategic confrontation of superpowers. Private armies are involved in full capacity.

The War Index is an analytical product that comes out the seventh year in a row. This is an analysis of the conflicts in the world, ranking them, expert opinion and forecasting how they will change and influence world policy.
