Borrell on EU support for Ukraine: “we are not waiting for Trump’s orders”

The outgoing head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, declared the independence of European support for Ukraine from the US position, stressing the importance of continued assistance to Kyiv. He said this on Tuesday before the start of the second day of the meeting of the heads of foreign affairs of the “Group of Seven” in Italy, writes UNN.

“We must continue to work to give Ukraine the support it needs. We as Europeans act regardless of what Mr. Trump wants to do. We have our obligations. We have our opportunities. When we say that we have strategic autonomy, the least we can say and do is to continue supporting Ukraine. We are not waiting for Mr. Trump’s orders,” Borrell said.

At the same time, the head of diplomacy noted: “Of course, what the United States will do is very important, but from our side, we must continue to use our full potential in the service of protecting Ukraine.”

He emphasized that the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine is present at the meeting to explain the situation. “We will renew our commitment to support Ukraine. This is the position of the European Union – at least on Friday when I leave. I hope it will be the same in [наступний] Monday,” Borrell emphasized.
