“The year 2024 has become the most difficult for the Ukrainian energy system since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. Russia carried out 13 massive attacks on the energy infrastructure, using new tactics, ballistic missiles and cluster munitions. This led to the loss of about 10 GW of generating capacity,” the message says.
Despite the large-scale destruction, Ukrainian energy workers carried out the largest repair campaign in the country’s history.
“It took place under constant shelling, and some objects had to be restored several times. Thanks to the perseverance of energy workers, there is light in the homes of Ukrainians, and the energy system remains intact. We thank all the workers of the energy industry for their dedication and fortitude. The most important task – to maintain the energy system – has been accomplished “, the Ministry of Energy declares.
The Ministry of Energy also listed the key results of the year:
– International support.
Donors pledged to provide more than 1 billion euros to the Energy Support Fund of Ukraine. 36 countries of the world provided humanitarian aid for the stable operation of the energy system. The IAEA supported Ukraine’s statement about the threats created by Russia and provides monitoring of critical facilities.
– Development of distributed generation.
As of December 31, a total of 967 MW of distributed generation facilities were connected, of which 835 MW in 2024. The strategy for the development of distributed generation until 2035 has been approved and financial programs have been launched to increase the energy independence of consumers. This includes 0% lending for the purchase of energy equipment, the program “Affordable loans 5-7-9”, “Green House”. Financing of projects worth UAH 8.3 billion has begun, which will provide almost 430 MW of new capacity.
– Development of atomic energy.
All 9 nuclear power units are prepared for the winter period, they provide 60% of electricity needs. Ukraine and the USA announced projects to create small modular reactors. Thanks to atomic generation, there is light even in the most difficult moments.
– Energy reform and European integration.
The National Energy and Climate Plan until 2030 was approved. Ukraine has increased its electricity import capacity from the EU to 2.1 GW and has been operating as part of the European ENTSO-E power grid for more than 1,000 days.
– Energy independence. The volume of own natural gas production has increased.
