President Volodymyr Zelenskyi had a conversation with the President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic, he announced on December 26.

According to him, the purpose of the conversation was to discuss the development of relations between Ukraine and Serbia.

“He thanked Serbia for its financial and humanitarian support. We coordinated our efforts on the common path to the EU. President Vučić congratulated the Ukrainian people on New Year’s holidays and expressed hope for a speedy peace,” the head of state said.

Zelenskyi reminded that at the beginning of the week he accepted the credentials of the new ambassador of Serbia, Andon Sapundja. He expressed hope that the restoration of full-fledged work of the country’s embassy will contribute to the development of cooperation between the two countries.

Vuchich did not comment on the conversation publicly.

At the beginning of October, Serbian President Oleksandr Vucic spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin for the first time in two and a half years. As Bloomberg reports, Putin said during the conversation that “all the goals of special military operations” in Ukraine “will be fulfilled.”

At the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, in October, Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vulin met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, despite recommendations to EU candidate countries to refrain from such contacts.

Vulin attended the summit as a representative of President Aleksandar Vučić, who, despite Putin’s personal invitation, refused to go to Russia.

Serbia has not joined EU sanctions against Russia over its war against Ukraine, although it is a candidate for EU membership.
