Ukraine will never agree to a compromise that would involve recognizing the occupied territories as part of the Russian Federation. Even under pressure from all allies, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi said during a meeting with representatives of the International Media Council.
– Whoever wants it. Even if all the allies of the world unite, we still do not recognize the occupied territories. This is impossible. We do not legally recognize them. For us, they will always remain occupied territories, until we return there, – said the Ukrainian leader.
He added that communication with Russia can only take place from a position of strength, because any attempt to treat the aggressor as an equal will be a defeat for Ukraine.
– Putin cannot be subjectivized in this story. He broke everything. He is guilty and should realize it. But he cannot be stopped, if we talk to him on an equal footing, it is a loss for Ukraine, – explained Zelensky.
He added that ending the active phase of the war is a top priority for the country and that the world should “find every opportunity to end the hot stage of the war.”
– This is the number one question. There can be many negotiations, but the main thing is to stop the active phase. This is the number one security guarantee, Zelenskyy added.
- On January 21, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, said that Ukraine would need at least 200,000 peacekeepers to ensure security.
- On January 20, US President Trump announced that 700,000 Ukrainian soldiers had died since the beginning of the invasion. He emphasized that the war in Ukraine “never should have started” and expressed the opinion that Putin is “destroying Russia by not making a deal.”
