Zelenskyi on Russia’s latest attack: Ukraine “constantly needs to strengthen its air defense”

President Volodymyr Zelenskyi commented on the latest Russian attack on Ukraine in the morning of January 15.

“It’s the middle of winter, and the target for the Russians remains the same: our energy sector. Among the goals are gas infrastructure and energy facilities that ensure the normal life of people,” he said on his social networks.

According to Zelensky, the Russian army fired more than 40 missiles, of which at least 30 were destroyed. He added that thanks to the work of air defense, the energy system continues to work.

“But we constantly need to strengthen the existing capabilities of the Ukrainian air defense. The partners at the NATO summit in Washington and in the Rammstein format made promises that have not yet been fully implemented. We also talked about licenses for the production of air defense and anti-missile systems, which can become one of the effective security guarantees for Ukraine, and this is also realistic and must be fulfilled,” the president wrote.

Zelensky thanked the partners for their help to Ukraine, but noted that it is not only about its security:

“Right now, the defense of Ukraine is proving whether Europe and the democratic world in general are capable of stopping wars – reliably and for a long time.”

Russian troops launched another large-scale missile attack on Ukraine in the morning of January 15. The operator “Ukrenergo” reported emergency shutdowns in several regions. The head of the Lviv region reported two hits to critical infrastructure facilities in the region.

According to the Ministry of Energy, since October 2022, Russia has carried out more than a thousand strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure facilities, and in 2024 alone, 9 GW of generating capacity was lost due to strikes.
