President Volodymyr Zelenskyi officially introduced Lieutenant General Oleg Ivashchenko as the new head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. Prior to that, Ivashchenko was the head of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine.
In his evening address on January 2, the head of state emphasized that the main task of the new leader will be systematic work on limiting Russia’s military potential. The President expressed confidence that Ivashchenko’s experience will help strengthen the position of Ukrainian military intelligence in countering the aggressor.
Earlier, Lieutenant General Kyrylo Budanov officially confirmed that he agreed to head the Office of the President of Ukraine after the corresponding proposal of Volodymyr Zelenskyi.
The appointment of Budanov may indicate the strengthening of the security and defense vector in the work of the Office of the President against the background of the war and the difficult international diplomatic situation.
The appointment of Kirill Budanov to the position of head of the Office of the President is unlikely to strengthen the former head of GUR . Political scientist Volodymyr Fesenko believes that the new chair will rather add problems and challenges to him.
Budanov’s appointment is neutralized a potential candidate in the presidential elections.
