President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi thanked the Pope Leo XIV for his efforts to establish a Christmas truce during the war waged by Russia against Ukraine.
Zelensky wrote about this in Telegram.
“We appreciate the constant attention of Pope Leo XIV to all diplomatic efforts to end Russia’s war against Ukraine and share His Holiness’ disappointment over Russia’s refusal to accept the recent proposal for a Christmas truce,” Zelenskyi said.
The head of state emphasized that the Ukrainian people are celebrating the fourth Christmas in the conditions of a full-scale war – the largest in Europe since the Second World War.
According to him, Russia not only rejected the proposal to stop the killings at least on this holy day, but also launched a massive missile and drone attack on the Ukrainian power system, which caused a blackout, and also continues assaults on the front.
“It is important that people around the world do not remain silent. It is important not to allow Russia to normalize cruelty, terror and aggression against our people. I call on all responsible leaders to support peace, as the pontiff is doing. We are grateful for every such manifestation of solidarity,” the President emphasized.
