“Any real peace must be built on the principle of ‘nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine,'” Metsola emphasized.
In his address, Zelensky thanked the EU for its constant support, urged not to forget that the united power of Europe is greater than Putin, and emphasized that the West “can push Russia to a just peace.”
Separately, the head of state focused on the need for tougher sanctions, especially against the so-called “shadow fleet” of Russia, which transports crude oil and oil products to circumvent current restrictions.
“No one can enjoy the calm during the storm. We must do everything possible to end this war honestly and fairly. 1,000 days of war is a huge challenge. We must make the next year a year of peace,” the president concluded his speech.
Most of the leaders of the political groups of the European Parliament, who spoke at the meeting, confirmed their strong support for Ukraine, calling on the EU leadership to provide Ukraine with the necessary weapons to win the war, including air defense systems, long-range missiles, tanks and drones.
At the end of the session, Roberta Metsola announced that the Ukrainian flag will fly next to the EU flag at the European Parliament buildings in Brussels, Strasbourg and Luxembourg.
During Tuesday, Western leaders, members of governments and ambassadors publish statements of solidarity with Ukraine to the thousandth day since the beginning of the full-scale attack of Russia.
French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in their statements on the 1000th day of full-scale war promised to maintain support for Ukraine.
