Apple admitted that third parties had access to recordings of users’ conversations made by accidentally activating Siri. However, the company still denies that advertisers have access to such records.

The Siri eavesdropping lawsuit has led to Apple recalling old rumors that the company was using the voice assistant’s preferences data to target ads. Apple had to publicly respond to them. The company continues to deny that it ever allowed advertisers to use Siri-generated recordings.

“Apple has never used Siri data to create marketing profiles, never made it available for advertising, and never sold it to anyone for any purpose. We are constantly developing technologies to make Siri even more private, and we will continue to do so,” Apple said in a statement.

Apple also says it doesn’t keep audio recordings of interactions with Siri unless users explicitly agree to help improve the voice assistant. And even then, the records are used exclusively for this purpose, the company says. They also emphasize that users can easily refuse to store this data at any time.

Facebook and Google have also denied using recordings from the gadgets’ microphones to target ads. But users, now and in the past, have experienced that products they talked about with other people soon appeared in the ads they saw.

As The Verge notes, experts have tried several times to investigate what leads to such situations. A 2018 investigation found no evidence of microphone spying, but found that some apps secretly recorded users’ screen actions and sent them to third parties. In addition, ad targeting networks also track data from people who have logged into the same network or spent time in the same places, so even if one person didn’t type in that search term, someone else probably did.
