“You can count on historic changes”: Stefanishyna on EU aid to Ukraine

The Deputy Prime Minister for European integration of Ukraine Olha Stefanishyna said that “we can count on significant historical changes”, answering the questions of Radio Liberty about the readiness of the European Union to act in the event of a reduction in aid from the USA and about a potential peacekeeping mission on the territory of Ukraine.

“With the meeting that took place a few weeks ago in Paris, you can count on quite significant historical changes. The end of war, peace agreements – they are never simple. They can’t just be written on paper – it’s a process,” she said on December 16 in a conversation with journalists at the “Law and Justice: Enhancing Interaction in War Conditions” forum.

Stefanishyna emphasized that no decision will be made that is not in the interests of Ukraine. At the same time, the Deputy Prime Minister did not give a more specific answer about EU aid and the discussion about the peacekeeping mission.

On December 7, US President-elect Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi and French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris. Commenting on this meeting, Trump emphasized the need to end the war as soon as possible, and Zelenskyi spoke of “peace through strength.”

“This (war) cannot be ended simply with a piece of paper and a few signatures. And the suspended fire without guarantees can be rekindled at any moment, as Putin has already done. In order to guarantee that there will be no more losses of Ukrainian men and women, it is necessary to guarantee the reliability of peace and not to turn a blind eye to the occupation,” said the President of Ukraine.

The Wall Street Journal later reported that Donald Trump wants to shift control over the observance of the regime of silence to the shoulders of Europe. The US president-elect reportedly does not plan to use American soldiers in a potential peacekeeping mission, as he told the presidents of France and Ukraine in Paris on December 7.

French President Emmanuel Macron will discuss the issue of placing a peacekeeping mission on the territory of Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire and peace between Ukraine and Russia at the summit of European Union leaders on December 18-19.
