The Kyiv Court of Appeal confirmed the decision of the court of first instance, according to which former President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych was found guilty of illegally crossing the state border and inciting desertion.
The attorney general’s office said the final sentence was determined by substituting a less severe sentence for a more severe one, given a previous conviction in 2019 for treason and aiding and abetting Russian war.
The court established that all the ex-president’s actions during his escape in February 2014 were coordinated by the Russian special services and the military with the direct agreement of the Kremlin leadership.
The investigation proved that on February 23, 2014, with the help of three Russian military helicopters, Yanukovych illegally left the territory of the Donetsk region and moved to Russia, and later to the temporarily occupied Crimea. While in Sevastopol, he encouraged military personnel of the State Security Department to desert, as a result of which some of the guards left with him for Russia and did not return to serve in Ukraine. The proven participation of the Russian side in the evacuation of the former official became one of the key elements of the indictment in the case of undermining national security.
