In addition, the current administration is discussing revoking licenses that allow banks to process transactions related to Russian energy carriers, the newspaper writes.

Sources of The Washington Post say that Biden has previously been wary of overly harsh sanctions against Russia’s energy sector, fearing a sharp rise in global oil prices and, accordingly, fuel prices in the United States.

But now, against the background of lower inflation and a more stable global oil market, these fears no longer play such a role, the article says.

A senior official of the Biden administration explained to WP that the new sanctions are necessary in order to provide Ukraine with the “best possible position” for self-defense and possible peace negotiations on “fair” terms.

“This event will be another step towards achieving this goal,” the official added on condition of anonymity.

Earlier, Bloomberg reported that the countries of the “Group of Seven” are discussing possible lowering of the so-called price ceiling on Russian oil transported by sea to limit Russia’s oil revenues.

We will also remind you that the EU is on December 16 adopted the 15th package sanctions against Russia, designed to counter sanctions evasion by targeting the Russian “shadow fleet” and to weaken the Russian military-industrial complex.
