On the Spanish island of Majorca, law enforcement officers detained a couple who is suspected of smuggling, breeding and selling exotic wild cats through the Internet.
Among the seized animals are white tigers, cougars, smoky leopards, carcalas and series. The operation has become part of a large -scale investigation that has been going on since March last year.
During a mansion in mansion in the city of Mancor, the employees of the Civic Guard of Spain found 19 representatives of the cat family. Among them are karakal, two series and 16 other hybrid individuals. In addition to animals, 40 veterinary passports issued in countries such as Russia, Belarus and China have been seized.
Documents are now carefully checked, because they suspect that some of them are forged.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Spain, the breeding of wild cats on Majorca is only the tip of the iceberg. The investigation believes that this is a global criminal organization, which includes smugglers and veterinarians. Most of the animals that were for sale arrived from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine.
They were illegally transported to the EU, in particular through the Polish-Belarusian border, using counterfeit documents.
The detainees actively advertised the sale of exotic animals on social networks. They placed ads for the sale of white tigers, smoky leopards, lynxes, hyenas, panther and cougar. The cost of a smoky leopard, for example, reached € 60 thousand.
Buyers were in different countries, which indicates the international scale of the criminal scheme.
The seized animals were temporarily placed in the local zoo, and later they will be transferred to a specialized center near Alicante. Spanish law enforcement officers emphasize that exotic cats need special care, and their keeping in private hands often leads to animal suffering and danger to humans.
