The new US president, Donald Trump, in his first speech after his inauguration on Monday, never directly mentioned Ukraine. On the campaign trail, Trump promised to bring peace before his inauguration, then within 24 hours of taking office.

CNN writes about it.

We will measure our success not only by the battles we win, but also by the wars we end, and most importantly, by the ones we avoid,” Trump said.

This was the only hint of his attitude to the war in Ukraine, which for a long time was a key issue of his foreign policy. On the campaign trail, Trump promised to bring peace before his inauguration, then within 24 hours of taking office, and later within six months. Panama, China, Mexico, Israel and even Mars were mentioned in the speech, but neither Ukraine nor Russia was mentioned.

This silence can be interpreted in different ways, but two options seem the most likely.

First: Now that Trump has officially assumed executive power, he is reluctant to make public comments about his position and timeline for ending the war. This would be the most pragmatic approach: a difficult task does not need the added pressure of a public countdown.

Second: Trump realized that a quick victory was not achievable, and the reality of the war turned out to be much more complex than he had assumed. This could mean being prepared for a protracted process that could potentially play into Vladimir Putin’s hands. The Kremlin could take advantage of the fatigue of the West, the weakening of the unity of the allies and the search for a quick, but disadvantageous end to the conflict for Ukraine, which will only strengthen Moscow’s ambitions.

On January 20, Donald Trump was sworn in and officially assumed the position of the 47th president of the United States.
