Cameron Diaz has opened up about why she finally decided to return to our screens, more than a decade after ‘retiring’.

The 52-year-old was a staple of Hollywood for years, thanks to roles in the Charlie’s Angels franchise, the Mask, the Holiday, Shrek and There’s Something About Mary.

She is set to slip back into her action roots for her new Netflix movie, Back in Action, alongside Jamie Foxx, Glenn Close, Kyle Chandler, Andrew Scott and Jamie Demetriou – which is released on January 17 and marks her first project since 2014’s Annie.

In the 11 years between films, she married Benji Madden and welcomed two children with the Good Charlotte rocker, while also finding time to launch organic wine brand Avaline.

In a new interview with Empire, Cameron explained how Jamie, who she previously shared the screen with in Any Given Sunday, was instrumental in her decision to return.

‘I thought that if I was going to come back and do a movie, the only person I’d come back and do it with would be this guy,’ the mom-of-two said.

However, Cameron insisted that the project doesn’t mean that she’s returning to the spotlight for good.

‘I don’t know how I view it. It’s hard to say,’ she continued. ‘If I say it then it becomes this thing. I reserve the right to say no to doing a movie ever again, and I reserve the right to say yes if I decide to.

‘I’m not defining anything. I’m just open to whatever makes sense for me and my family at any given moment.’

Cameron has also been busy launching her iconic Avaline wine brand (Picture: Getty) There is also one genre that Cameron is absolutely leaving behind, as she added: ‘No more romcoms, only momcoms.’

Noted.

While we’ve been rewatching Cameron’s extensive back catalog for years, Back in Action will be her first new film since 2014.

The official synopsis reads: ‘Years after giving up life as CIA spies to start a family, Emily and Matt find themselves dragged back into the world of espionage when their cover is blown.’

She also appeared in the Holiday with Jude Law (Picture: Shutterstock) Discussing her decision to take a step back from the spotlight, during an appearance on Kevin Hart’s Hart to Heart series, the Bad Teacher star previously explained: ‘When you do something at a really high level for a long period of time, when you’re the person that is delivering one thing, you’re the person on the screen, all parts of you that isn’t that has to sort of be handed off to other people.

‘For my personal, spiritual self, I was realizing that that one part of me that functioned at a high level wasn’t enough.

‘[This included] different parts of my life, my home, every aspect, from finance, just the management of me as a human being, not me as Cameron Diaz the machine.

‘I just looked around and there were so many parts of my life that I wasn’t touching and that I wasn’t managing, and I couldn’t really manage, because everything was so massive.’

Back in Action premieres on Netflix on January 17.
