This Sunday, October 26, Ukraine will switch to winter time. Traditionally, at four o’clock in the morning, the hands of the clock are moved back one hour – that is, to three in the morning.

Gadgets that have automatic clock change installed will update the time on their own.

The system of transition from summer to winter time is established decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated May 13, 1996.

It regulates that Ukrainians must change their clocks to summer and winter time on the last Sunday of March and October, respectively.

For the first time in Ukraine, the clock hands were moved back in 1981, when our country was part of the USSR. This was done to save electricity and make efficient use of daylight.

In 2024, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine generally supported draft law No. 4201which cancels the transition to summer and winter time in Ukraine. But the president did not sign the documentso everything remained unchanged.

Currently, more than 60 countries in the world change the hands of the clock to winter and summer time, including almost all European countries. At the same time, clocks are not set in Russia, which is also required of residents of temporarily occupied territories.

How the change of time can affect health Shifting clocks disrupts human biological rhythms, explains “UP. Life” biologist Olga Maslova. The system of daily rhythms is tied to a certain regime, and when it changes, a person’s well-being may deteriorate. That is, if our schedule has less differences on different days, the body functions better.

More sensitive before the transfer of time, there may be people with cardiovascular diseases. The consequences of the transition are also felt more strongly by the elderly, while babies, on the contrary, tolerate it a little easier, since they spend a lot of time sleeping.

By researchdisruption of the circadian rhythm during the transition may increase the risk of ischemic stroke. During the first days after the time change, the number of hospitalizations for this reason increases.

During analysis insurance claims of patients from the US and Sweden also found that cardiovascular disease is exacerbated during periods of clock change. The study used data from 150 million Americans and 9 million Swedes.

After changing the clocks, people can feel increased anxiety, as well as the risk of developing depression increases. First of all, those who already have a predisposition to mental disorders.

However, according to Olga Maslova, some adults may not feel discomfort from changing to another time. Everything depends on the peculiarities of the work mode and genetic prerequisites of a person.

How to prepare for the clock change By in words biology, an average healthy person needs to adapt to a new schedule 3-4 days. But with certain individual characteristics, this process can continue up to 10 days.

At the same time, there are several steps that can help facilitate the adaptation process:

Adjusting the sleep mode. It is better to start preparing for changing the clocks a few days in advance. To do this, you can shift the time of falling asleep and waking up by 10-20 minutes every day.

Monitoring the diet. It is necessary to ensure that the gastrointestinal tract does not experience strong desynchronosis. Therefore, a few days before changing the clock, meals should also be gradually shifted to the time that will be next week.

Postponement of important matters. These days you need to try to minimize psychological pressure, soften your schedule and not plan anything important, as there may be nuances with concentration of attention. It is necessary to ensure that there is no lack of sleep, reduce physical activity and rest more.

Improving the quality of sleep. To feel good and get back into your usual schedule faster, at the Public Health Center advise:avoid caffeine 6 hours before bedtime (coffee, tea, most carbonated drinks); do not drink alcohol and give up smoking; do not eat heavy, spicy, sweet food 4 hours before bedtime; move more during the day, and go for a light walk in the evening.

We will remind you that earlier we told about the history of changing the clocks and how the change of time affects health.
