On December 19, the Orthodox Church honors Saint Boniface of Tarsia. At first he was not distinguished by righteousness, but he turned into a devoted Christian and died a martyr’s death.
Boniface lived in the Roman Empire in the 3rd century. At first, he worked as a manager of the estates of the rich Roman woman Aglaida and was in an illicit relationship with her. However, even then he had a good heart, helped the poor and travelers.
Wanting to purify her soul, Aglaida sent Boniface to Cilicia to bring the relics of the holy martyrs. Arriving in the city of Tarsus, he witnessed the brutal torture of Christians. Impressed by their steadfastness, Boniface declared himself a Christian, kissed the shackles of the martyrs and himself went to the execution.
After the death of Boniface, his relics were returned to Rome, where Aglaida built a temple in his honor. This event became a symbol of the fact that even a person who once sinned can achieve holiness through sincere repentance.
