In the church calendar, this day commemorates the holy great martyr Anastasia, and in Ukraine, at the same time, professional holidays of diplomats and energy workers are celebrated.
December 22 also has an unofficial but indicative date – “The Day of the Short Person”, which reminds us of respect for diversity.
For believers, December 22 is the day of commemoration of the holy great martyr Anastasia, who lived in Rome at the end of the 3rd century and grew up in a wealthy family. According to church tradition, her father was a pagan, while her mother secretly professed Christianity and raised her daughter in the faith.
Despite the forced marriage with a cruel pagan, Anastasia did not renounce her beliefs, and after her husband’s death, she directed her inheritance to help the needy and support persecuted Christians.
During the persecution of the Emperor Diocletian, she was arrested and executed around 304, condemned to death by fire.
In Ukraine, on December 22, the “Day of the Diplomatic Service of Ukraine” is celebrated, a date that emphasizes the role of foreign policy in the survival and development of the state. The holiday was introduced by presidential decree in 2005, and the day itself was not chosen by chance.
It was on December 22, 1917 that the General Secretariat of International Affairs of the Ukrainian People’s Republic was created — the first national body responsible for the international course of Ukraine. The modern Ukrainian diplomatic service counts from this point.
Another important date is December 22 – “Energy Day”, which has been preserved in Ukraine as a professional tribute to the people on whom the stability of the infrastructure depends. The material emphasizes that the symbolism of the day is also strengthened by the seasonal context — the period of the shortest daylight.
Energy is directly related to economic and national security: it is light in homes, and heat in hospitals, and the work of enterprises, and communication. In today’s conditions, this profession sounds especially sharp, because behind the usual words there is daily responsibility and risk.
