What are preventive shutdowns, how do they work and whether to expect them in the future: YASNO has answered

What are preventive blackouts, how do they work and should we expect them in the future: YASNO answered Serhiy Kovalenko explained the reasons for preventive blackouts in Ukraine due to the training of Russian strategic aviation. He also talked about the peculiarities of the power system and the possibility of further shutdowns.”, — write on: unn.ua

Director General of YASNO Serhiy Kovalenko explained why a preventive blackout was applied in Ukraine this morning, as well as whether such blackouts will become permanent, reports UNN.

“Today turned out to be a busy morning. Russia was training its strategic aviation, Ukraine – its energy system, and people, as it turned out, are a memory.

Because it happened that a significant number of people forgot what happened at the beginning of 2023. And at that time, let me remind you, preventive shutdowns were almost a classic of the genre,” Kovalenko wrote.

So he reminded what is preventive shutdown and how does it work.

“The first thing to remember is that as much electricity is consumed, so much should be produced and vice versa.

Second: the energy network is a chain of serially connected energy objects. Current from the power plant goes to the customer through substations via wires. When one of the links stops working, the consumer is lost, and a short circuit occurs at the generation facility or substation due to excess electricity. The equipment is on fire. Therefore, in order to reduce the risks of overloads, electricity production is being reduced at the stations,” Kovalenko said.

He specified that TPPs/CHPs usually helped to quickly operate generation volumes. But the shelling in the summer hit the thermal generation very hard, so sometimes you have to maneuver with the help of other objects that are not really intended for this.

“However, when there is a question of an entire power plant and a few hours without power or a broken power plant and months with a deficit, then the question does not arise. Actually, for the same reason, the light did not turn on as quickly as we would have liked. After starting the power unit, it needs a certain time to gain power. Unfortunately, this does not happen immediately,” Kovalenko added.

He answered the question, whether they will now turn off the light every time.

“There will be as many shutdowns as necessary. Believe me, no one wants to do it just to annoy people. But as you rightly noted, there is a war in our country. So sorry for the inconvenience,” YASNO’s general director summed up.
