“PASSION is a strong passion, desire, or devotion to something.
When I started playing tennis at the age of eight, it was just a game. Then it became my passion. My dream was to one day become a professional tennis player.
I know that people often think they know when it’s time for an athlete to stop. They believe that if you get old, if you no longer show the same level, if you don’t have the same results and rating, then it’s time to quit.
But no matter how much I am a competitor, no matter how much I like to win, it’s not always just about that. Passion is not only the result. This is the desire to go beyond one’s own limits.
I’m fine with not winning another Grand Slam. I’m fine with not being in the top 10 anymore. But I love the process itself – constantly checking what I am capable of.
I know that one day the end of my career will come, but until then I will always fight with all my strength.
To all the fans around the world, and especially to those who supported me in Basel – THANK YOU❤️🙏🏻🌎. It means everything to me. That’s why I keep going forward.”
Wawrinka managed to win one match at the 500th in Basel, defeating Miomir Kecsmanovich in the round of 16. In the second round, the Swiss lost to Casper Ruud.
