It is necessary to increase the amount of BLOBs in Ethereum blocks to increase L2 bandwidth. This was stated by the co-founder of the network, Vitalik Buterin.
March 13 in the Dencun hard fork, EIP-4844 was activated, which implemented the Proto-Danksharding option to create a new type of transaction for BLOB objects.
This space is intended for temporary storage of large volumes of data, which made it possible to reduce commissions in the L2 ecosystem several times, especially on the basis of Rollups technology.
According to Buterin, the BLOB space is currently about 75% full. The target and maximum are three and six BLOBs per block. The co-founder of Ethereum proposed to increase these indicators to four and eight.
“The ecosystem is sleeping, aware that it is uncomfortably close to the ceiling,” Buterin commented.
Implementation of the initiative requires changes within EIP-7623, which is addressed in the Pectra update.
EIP-7623 proposes to increase the access cost to the basic level of data availability in Ethereum. This will reduce the maximum block size from 2.7Mb to ~1Mb and make room for potentially increasing the gas limit or number of BLOBs.
Buterin believes that some L2s are reluctant to bring in large arrays of binary data because of potential market congestion.
“We can’t slow down the pace of transition from rollups to BLOBs. EIP-7623 is critical,” he explained.
The head of Base, Jess Pollack, supported Buterin’s proposal.
I strongly support @VitalikButerin’s proposal to increase blob count, combined with EIP-7623.
reduces worst-case block size and adds needed capacity for fast growing L2s. the growth is exponential!

“[Активація EIP-7623] in the worst case, it will reduce the size of the block, but it will add the necessary capacity for fast-growing L2, and the growth will become exponential,” the expert pointed out.
Earlier, Buterin noted the increase in the availability of roll-ups against the background of falling fees
In September, Web3 researcher Cygaar called for an increase in BLOB fees in order to restore ETH’s burn rate.
We will remind, the developers proposed to divide the big update of Pectra into two parts. The first phase is planned to be activated in early 2025.
