On December 30, a match of the 1/16 finals of the WTA 250 tournament took place in Auckland (New Zealand) between Naomi Osaka (Japan, WTA 57) and Lina Hlushko (Israel, WTA 220). The Japanese woman won with a score of 6:4, 6:4 in 1 hour and 21 minutes.

The match took place in the background anti-Israeli protests. During the match, the slogans “Free Palestine”, “Israel is a terrorist state” and “Israel is gone” could be heard chanted by demonstrators from the street.

Hlushko is the only representative of Israel in the top 500 of the WTA ranking. By the way, 24-year-old Lina qualified for the main draw of Oakland, beating Louise Chirico and Monique Berry.

The most interesting thing is that Glushko has Ukrainian roots. Her parents Serhiy and Olga immigrated from Ukraine to Israel in 1999, a year before Lina was born.
