On the evening of September 18, boxer and world champion Oleksandr Usyk was detained for several hours at Krakow airport. As of this morning, he has already been released. This was announced by the boxer himself, Minister of Foreign Affairs Andriy Sybiga and President Volodymyr Zelenskyi.

– There was a misunderstanding, which was quickly resolved. Thanks to everyone who was concerned. I thank the Ukrainian diplomats for their support. And respect to Polish law enforcement officers who do their job, despite their height, weight, arm span and regalia, – the athlete wrote in stories on the network – Usyk wrote on Instagram.

Sibigaz noted that the representatives of the ministry, on the instructions of the president, “immediately reacted to the detention” of the champion in Krakow and “facilitated his release.”

– Our consul general told me the details. We consider such actions disproportionate and unacceptable towards our champion and will send a corresponding note to the Polish side, said the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.

Zelensky stated that he had a telephone conversation with Usyk after he was detained. The President is outraged by this attitude of “our citizen and champion”.

– He instructed the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sibiza and the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Ihor Klymenko to immediately find out all the details of the incident at the Krakow airport. I was just informed that everything is fine, our champion was released and no one is detaining him anymore, – wrote Zelensky at midnight.

Commenting on the short-term detention of Usyk and his wife Kateryna, who wrote that “everything is fine with him, nothing criminal.”

According to the publication, the annual income of the boxer is approximately 54 million dollars. This is 5 times more than football player Oleksandr Zinchenko, who is in second place.
  • On August 24, in honor of the 33rd anniversary of the Independence Day of Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a number of decrees, with which he awarded Ukrainian defenders and athletes. Oleksandr Usyk received the Order of Freedom.
