US National Guard soldier Jack Teixeira, accused of organizing the leak of secret Pentagon documents, including documents about the Russian Federation’s war in Ukraine, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on November 12.

Earlier this year, Teixeira pleaded guilty to six counts of knowingly possessing and transmitting classified information related to national defense.

The 22-year-old defendant did not react to the sentence. Earlier in the hearing, he apologized, telling the judge he was “sorry for the damage caused”.

Prosecutors initially sought 17 years in prison, saying Teixeira “committed one of the most significant violations of espionage law in American history.”

The lawyers asked for 11 years of imprisonment. They acknowledged that their client “made a terrible decision that he has repeated over the course of 14 months,” but said Teixeira’s actions were never intended to “harm the United States.”

Jack Teixeira was arrested in April 2023 after numerous photocopies of secret Pentagon documents appeared on social networks with information on military aid from NATO countries to Ukraine, with an estimate of Russian losses during the invasion of Ukraine, with American intelligence data on the state of the Russian army, with other information about different countries.

According to the investigation, Teixeira shared secret documents with the participants of the game chat. This leak is called the largest in the country for many years, since the scandal with Wikileaks.
