Ukrainian officials have expressed concern because they put pressure on them to achieve disadvantageous conditions in a broader agreement, especially after Washington temporarily suspended weapons and exchange intelligence with Kiev early this month.

In February, Ukraine and the United States reached a framework agreement on the joint development of mineral resources of Ukraine, including oil and gas. The project of the agreement of February 25 is a cut version of the initial proposal of the Trump administration.

In particular, it seized a preliminary reference to potential revenues from mining of $ 500 billion, and excluded existing mineral production projects, which are already contributing to the state finances of Ukraine.

The agreement also added a line stating that the United States “support Ukraine’s efforts to obtain security guarantees required to establish a long peace.”

However, this agreement, which Kyiv considers satisfactory, remains unsuccessful. According to Ukrainian and American officials, this is due to the fact that both parties have difficult negotiations that cover wider economic and security issues.

Two Ukrainian high -ranking officials who participate in negotiations with the United States on mineral resources of Ukraine said that the Trump administration has not yet introduced new conditions to Kiev.

“But I understand that … they are working on a greater agreement,” said one of the officials who, like others, spoke on the conditions of anonymity.

Prehistory:

  • US President Donald Trump said the day before that Ukraine and the United States will have a “critical mineral resource” agreement in the near future.
  • It is known that, as a result of the negotiations in the Saudi city of Jedda on March 11, the Presidents of the United States and Ukraine have agreed on the Agreement on the Development of Critical Mineral Resources of Ukraine.
  • On March 14, Viceremierk on European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olga Stephanyshyn stated that the US Framework Agreement on Mineral Resources was completed and Ukraine is ready for signing at any time.
