A comprehensive ceasefire has become one of the key topics of negotiations in Paris, where Ukraine has clearly marked its position: the agreement is possible only if there is real security guarantees.
About it reports The Wall Street Journal with reference to a Western official.
According to him, the United States presented a project to monitor the armistice if it is achieved. The details are not disclosed yet.
On April 17, in Paris, representatives of the United States held meetings with delegations of Ukraine and European countries. Presidential Office Head Andriy Yermak called negotiations “Very meaningful, ”emphasizing that Kiev insists on obtaining clear guarantees from international partners, in particular that Russia will not renew aggression after reaching the truce.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that the Ukrainian side had raised the guarantee issue, but refused to resort to details. Despite the restraint of Donald Trump’s administration in official guarantees, Ukraine continues to seek responsibility from the US and European allies.
Ukrainian representatives in Paris reminded the American delegation of the position declared earlier in Saudi Arabia: Kiev will agree to the ceasefire, if Russia will take it. However, the Kremlin, as usual, put forward conditions aimed at limiting Ukraine’s defense capability – the termination of arms supply, mobilization and training of servicemen.
On the eve of Marco Rubio stated that if there were no signs of real progress, the US may stop mediation in the negotiations in the coming days. Donald Trump also expressed a desire to reach the agreement as soon as possible, but did not specify the deadline.
Meanwhile, Europe is discussing the possible involvement of peacekeeping forces to control the compliance with the agreement. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky noted that at least 100,000 peacekeepers may be required to effectively contain the Russian Federation. However, Russia expected to stated “NATO’s presence in Ukraine, threatening Europe again.
Ukraine continues to fight not only at the front but also at the diplomatic level, demanding real peace guarantees, not just the illusions of negotiations.
