Ukrainian polarists filmed whales of stripes / UNIAN collage, video screenshotsFor the first time, Ukrainian scientists have released unique filming of interesting whales – Antarctic stripes.
“For the first time, we show the shooting from the drone of the Antarctic strip – a whale, which is widespread in the Ukrainian station” Academician Vernadsky “, but it does not happen to our researchers as often as humpbacks,” – reported at the National Antarctic Scientific Center.
It is said that this whale is one of the smallest of the strip family. Its length is 7-9 meters, but some individuals reach 10 meters. Mammal weight – mostly ranges in the area of 5-6 tons, but there are quite large representatives of the species, weighing 10 tons. According to scientists, females are slightly larger than males.
The species occurs in all the oceans of the Southern Hemisphere, it usually sails into the icy continent for Antarctic summer to feed the wing. In the winter, these whales are sailed to the north, in warmer waters for reproduction, but some stripes can hibernate in Antarctic.
“This whale is usually quickly moved between the ice floes, showing only the back with the characteristic swimmer, which can be recognized from afar. This swimmer is a sickle, rounded and sharpened at the same time. Due to such maneuverability, the Antarctic strip is quite difficult for research: to record it.
On a published video you can see the whales gracefully move past the polar boat. It seems that they do not notice people, but simply float in their business: “waving” fins, dive, let fountains.
