As a result of the rocket attack on the morning of November 17, several substations, which depend on the external power supply of Ukrainian nuclear power plants, were damaged. Due to the shelling of the nuclear power plant, electricity production was reduced.

This is stated in the statement of the Director General of the IAEA, Rafael Mariano Grossi.

“In the morning, Ukraine’s operating nuclear power plants reduced electricity production as a precautionary measure following large-scale military operations across the country, which reportedly targeted energy infrastructure that further increased the risks to nuclear and physical nuclear security,” Grossi said.

Although the Khmelnytsky, Rivne and South Ukrainian NPPs did not suffer direct direct hits and did not stop their work, “several electrical substations on which they depend suffered further damage during the strikes,” the agency emphasized.

According to Grossi, IAEA teams visited seven substations located outside nuclear power plants across the country in September and October to assess the damage caused by the August attacks and will determine if further visits are needed after the November 17 attacks.

“The IAEA teams based at the NPP heard the actions of air defense and sought shelter during the air alarm signals. At the Khmelnytskyi NPP, the IAEA team heard a loud explosion. At the Rivne NPP, two 330 kilovolt (kV) power transmission lines were unavailable,” he added. .

“The country’s energy infrastructure is extremely vulnerable, which directly affects nuclear and physical nuclear security.

We are still assessing the full extent of the damage. At this critical time, I reiterate the importance of upholding the seven core principles of nuclear safety and security during conflict, in particular the fourth principle that all nuclear facilities must be provided with a reliable power supply from the external network,” the head of the IAEA summarized.

We will remind:

On the morning of November 17, the Russians launched a massive missile attack on the Ukrainian energy sector 210 missiles and UAVs, of which 144 were destroyed.

As a result of the attacks, the equipment of the DTEK thermal power plants was seriously damaged.
