Ukraine begins active diplomatic work with partners to block Russian tankers and confiscate the aggressor’s oil.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said this on Wednesday, February 4, after listening to the report of Ukraine’s foreign intelligence on the Russian tanker fleet.
According to the Foreign Intelligence Service, during 2025 the Russian Federation involved more than 122 vessels operated by European owners and operators in the oil trade. President Volodymyr Zelenskyi emphasized that this fleet makes up a significant part of the export capacity of the Russian Federation, so Kyiv will insist on strengthening the legislation of partner countries to stop such vessels.
In an evening address on February 4, the head of state called on Europe to take more active countermeasures and thanked partners who have already expressed their readiness to implement strict restrictions. Since the shadow fleet of the Russian Federation allows the aggressor to circumvent sanctions and finance the war, Ukraine will focus on bilateral formats of cooperation to achieve quick results at sea. A number of meetings are expected in the near future, the purpose of which will be the development of mechanisms for the confiscation of Russia’s energy resources and the complete isolation of its tanker fleet from European services.
