Ukraine wanted to buy weapons from South Korea that would help in the confrontation with the Russian army. But Seoul refused the agreement.
This is reported by SBS News.
The Ukrainian delegation asked for permission to purchase, not a free transfer of weapons. In particular, they requested Cheongung surface-to-air medium-range missiles, the publication writes.
Sources of the TV channel specified that Ukraine requested non-lethal weaponry. In addition to Cheongung interceptor missiles, the delegation was interested in radars for air defense and anti-artillery, charges for up to 155-mm artillery shells, which “make the shells fly.”
It is likely that Korean defense companies such as LIG Nex1, Hanwha and Hyundai Rotem received offers from Ukraine to cooperate in the purchase of weapons, but the Ministry of Defense of South Korea advised the entrepreneurs to refrain from signing contracts.
The reason was “a high risk of violating foreign trade laws that limit exports to war zones.”
Recently, Defense Minister Rustem Umyerov met in Seoul with the President of South Korea, Yoon Seok-yol. They discussed the strengthening of security in connection with the participation of troops from North Korea in the war with Ukraine.
Earlier it was reported that the Ukrainian delegation led by Defense Minister Rustem Umyerov will visit South Korea. There, the parties discussed the possibility of providing military aid.
