Such a statement was made by the former president of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen, writes Politico. “They should do everything possible to help Ukrainians. And we still have time,” she emphasized.

The former Taiwanese leader’s comments came after Admiral Samuel Paparo, commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command, said arms shipments to Ukraine had begun to affect the military’s ability to prepare for an escalation in Asia.

The paper noted that while Taiwan is heavily dependent on US arms and military aid for its defense, Tsai expressed confidence that US support for Ukraine would help deter China from attacking.

“Ukraine’s victory will serve as the most effective deterrent,” said Tsai.

Taiwan’s increase in defense spendingTaiwan has increased its defense spending by 80% in the past 8 years, reaching a record $19 billion this year.

But that was not enough to satisfy Donald Trump, who suggested Taiwan “must pay” and called on the country to increase defense spending to 10% of GDP.
