He called the agreements with the EU second only to the bilateral security guarantees that Ukraine seeks to receive from the United States. This includes, in particular, the “Coalition of the Willing” and European integration.
“These are economic security guarantees for Ukraine. We want 2027 – we are talking about a specific date when Ukraine will be ready. That is, technically, Ukraine will be ready already in the first half of 2026 for the opening of all clusters. It will be fully technically ready in 2027, in our opinion,” he said.
At the same time, Zelensky pointed out that joining the European Union should be part of peace agreements:
“We want a specific date in our treaty to end the war, so that all parties will then adhere to those agreements, including the aggressor, who will sign up to the 20-point plan when that time comes. So that no one will block us later.”
Lithuanian President Nauseda, for his part, reiterated Vilnius’ support for Ukraine’s accession to the EU by 2030. President Navrotsky did not name specific terms, but noted that “Ukraine’s path is towards Western civilization, not Eastern.”
On January 6, the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said that joining the EU is possible key security guarantee for Ukraine. Reuters recalls that the viv was previously included in the 20-point peace plan negotiated between the United States, Ukraine and the European Union.
Unnamed representatives of the European Commission told the Financial Times that Ukraine’s membership in the bloc could facilitate Volodymyr Zelenskyi’s agreement to territorial concessions in favor of Russia. According to them, Zelenskyi can present the accession to the EU to the Ukrainian people as an achievement.
