The agreement between Ukraine and Russia on gas transit expires on January 1, 2025 and will not be extended. However, as the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal stated during a conversation with the head of the government of Slovakia Robert Fico, Ukraine is ready to ensure the transit of any gas, with the exception of Russian, if the European Commission makes such a request.
“Ukraine is ready to fulfill the obligations we have taken within the framework of the Association Agreement with the EU. Therefore, if the European Commission officially appeals to Ukraine regarding the transit of any gas, except for Russian gas, we will, of course, discuss it and are ready to implement relevant agreements based on the principles of energy security, both of the EU in general and of each European nation,” Shmyhal wrote.
The Prime Minister of Ukraine emphasized that the priority of the state remains energy security for the whole of Europe, in particular, a stable supply of natural gas in the winter period.
Shmyhal thanked European partners for their support and understanding that Russia uses energy exports as a tool to finance aggression against Ukraine, as well as to continue destabilizing the countries of Europe and the European Union.
“It is important that the adopted 15th package of sanctions of the European Union strengthens the sanctions, in particular, against the shadow tanker fleet, which brings Russia significant funds for the continuation of the war. Sanction pressure against the Russian energy sector should be continued, it is one of the key elements of forcing Russia to real peace,” he added.
The Prime Minister of Ukraine noted that during the negotiations with Robert Fico, the expansion of cooperation between Ukraine and Slovakia in the field of electricity was discussed. Shmyhal emphasized that last week, 30% of Ukraine’s electricity imports came from Slovakia. He thanked for the support and emphasized readiness for further expansion of this cooperation, which strengthens the stability of Ukraine and supports the economy of Slovakia.

In addition, the Prime Minister reported on “ambitious” plans in the field of logistics and transportation. In particular, the Kyiv-Bratislava train started operating on December 15, which opens up new opportunities for transport cooperation.
Earlier, Fico said that Slovakia is leading “very intense” negotiations, so that Ukraine continues the transit of Russian gas in 2025.
He accused the West of pressure on gas transit and said that Slovakia “sees no reason to pay more for gas than necessary for reasons of geopolitics.”
EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen said that the EU is preparing for the final termination of the supply of Russian energy carriers.
