President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said that Ukraine is ready to hand over prisoners from the DPRK to the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, if he organizes an exchange for Ukrainian military personnel, Zelenskyi wrote in a telegram on January 12.

“Ukraine is ready to hand over his people to Kim Jong-un if he can arrange their exchange for our soldiers who are in captivity in Russia,” the post states.

The President of Ukraine emphasized that there may be other options for those soldiers from North Korea who do not want to return.

“In particular, those Koreans who show a desire to bring peace closer by spreading the truth about this war in Korean will have such an opportunity,” Zelenskyy said.

Earlier, the Security Service of Ukraine told the details of the capture by the Defense Forces of the first North Korean soldiers who fought against Ukraine in Kurshchyna.

According to the press service of the department, it is about two North Korean soldiers, one of whom was captured on January 9, 2025 by the fighters of tactical group No. 84 of the SSO, and the other by paratroopers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The SBU notes that immediately after the capture, the foreigners were provided with all necessary medical care, as provided for by the Geneva Convention, and for the purpose of primary investigative measures, they were taken to Kyiv, where they are kept in appropriate conditions.

The captives do not speak Ukrainian, English or Russian, so communication with them takes place through Korean language translators in cooperation with South Korean intelligence.

The SBU said that one of the prisoners said that he was born in 2005, he thought that he was going to study, and not to the war against Ukraine.

Another man had to write his answers because of a jaw injury, the SBU said. This soldier said he was born in 1999 and was a sniper in the North Korean army.

The capture by the Ukrainian military of two North Korean soldiers in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation was also confirmed by the intelligence agency of South Korea. The intelligence of the Republic of Korea quoted one of the captured soldiers of the DPRK as saying that “among the North Korean soldiers in Russia, there were ‘significant’ losses.” It also noted that one of the captives went without food and water for four to five days before he was captured by Ukrainian forces.

It became known about the arrival of the first North Korean troops in Kurshchyna last fall.

According to the USA, South Korea and Ukraine, 10,000 to 12,000 North Korean soldiers arrived in Russia in October. They were involved in the war on the side of Russia, units of the DPRK are used in the Kursk region.

Moscow and Pyongyang did not confirm the direct participation of the North Korean military in the fighting.
